They didn’t fill our heads with racism and prejudice, and for this I am very thankful. I grew up with an open mind and an equal opportunity. To allow a child to grow up in a diverse environment is one of the best gifts a parent can give his or her child. The ability to survive in this world depends on teamwork; we all need to be able to work together with one another. Stereotypes are present in every society. They are so common that we sometimes overlook the corruptness of them. Doob presents the definition of a stereotype as “an exaggerated, oversimplified image, maintained by prejudiced people, of the characteristics of the group members against whom they are prejudiced.” He also states that stereotypes usually either make that group work harder to overcome the stereotype or make them stay the same because the group figures they are going to have the stereotype anyways. Both of my parents are Persian, which makes me full-blooded Persian. Sometimes I am angered by the fact that racism amongst Persian people is overlooked.
