Sociological Imagination
...the straight and narrow “box” of their own personal world and everyday life experiences. If they don’t realize that something is caused by social forces, then they tend to think it was natural. By acknowledging the outside forces that led up to the specific event, they could look beyond their own personal and private matters to see them as public issues. Most in which they can not be held accountable for and that are impossible for one person to change. The sociological imagination helps us avoid “blaming the victim” (Ryan, William 1972); this is when people who are disadvantaged by social forces beyond their control are held to be the cause of their situation and their suffering. Which many of us in our society today do, including myself. Consider the loss of a job, instead of blaming one’s self for lack of motivation or skills; they should look at the macro-social conditions that influence these events such as continuing economic change.
