Servant life was harsh had no control over who they would work for and sentences were often prolonged. Some died from disease and never received their freedom. Family laborers worked for their own families land, did not have enough land to make a profit- only enough to feed themselves. They came from large familes, where each wife had an average of 8 kids. They did not need more help than their family, some neighbors and a few extra helping hands. The southern colonies began used all three systems. indentured servants when they realized the economic opportunity that was possible from growing tobacco. They wanted to grow tobacco in enormous quantities and the more help they could get the better. Since native Americans refused to help, they originally depended on family members.When England realized the growing opportunities they sold themselves off as indentured servants to work in the tobacco fields. 80% of the immigrants who came to the Chesapeake were indentured servants making it a servant society. More servants made it possible for more tobacco and also more land. For every servant purchased, the planter received fifty acres of land. When the West Indies developed sugar plantations they bought slaves from Africa to do the work and they became extremely wealthy. Soon Barbadian planters brought slaves to Carolina to encourage them to develop a profitable export crop. Began purchasing slaves from Africa rather than servants.
