As Silas accumulated gold, it became his one purpose in life and he would hide his gold in the floorboards and counts it every night for fifteen years after living in Raveloe. At this point in the story, money has developed to be the main focus in Silas’ character, and he is unable to build a relationship with anyone. During his period of anti-social greediness, Silas is robbed by Godfrey Class, son of Squire. He is devastated by his loss and continues weaving in a state of mild depression after alerting the town of the robbery. Part of the community reaches out to Silas with advice; one of those people was Dolly Winthrop. Soon after, a toddler named Molly wanders away from her mother and finds her way to Silas’ cottage. Silas finds Molly’s mother dead and becomes emotionally attached to the girl. He adopts the toddler and names her Eppie, caring for her with the help of Dolly Winthrop.
