He comes to focus all of his attentions on gold, which he keeps underneath his floorboards and counts every night. He carries on in this way for fifteen years, until one day his money is stolen. It is taken by Dunstan Cass, the son of the richest man in the village, who is attempting to pay back a debt owed to his father. His brother Godfrey gave him money left in his charge, though the money was given to him by a farmer to pay rent to his father. Dunstan decides to recover the money by selling Godfrey's horse, but on the way to deliver the animal he accidentally kills it. He decides to steal Silas' money, but never returns home. Godfrey must do as his brother says because Dunstan knows of his secret marriage to Molly, who has borne his child. He is in love with Nancy Lammeter, but cannot marry her because of his prior commitment.
