Godfrey Cass' selfish behavior got him what he wanted, Nancy to take his hand in marriage, but he betrayed his own newborn daughter in the process. Godfrey was in love with Nancy, or so he thought. Either way Nancy was going to be his wife, and she eventually was. This chain of events was beneficial for Silas. The abandoned baby girl, Eppie, found her way into Silas' home and heart. Soon they were inseparable, and Silas finally experienced true love. After years of waiting, Silas was able to take on the responsibility of being a father, a responsibility not everyone is able to experience. Godfrey Cass on the other hand, believed he had an empty void in his heart, which could only be filled by Eppie.
