All because it contradicted with our belief that “all men are created equal.” Furthermore, homosexuality is a personal preference; it is not any better or worse than the idea of heterosexuality. By legalizing same-sex marriages, we would be giving marriage rights to two people of the same gender to act upon their love for one another. As we all know, benefits are given to married couples, such as joint tax filing, health and life insurance, retirement, etc. If heterosexual couples are given all these benefits, then it is only fair, by law, to give these to homosexual couples as well. If the government is responsible to make such decisions as who can marry whom, they should also decide what would be best for an individual. The government would be doing a major disservice, if two gay men were living and sharing everything together, but they are burdened with financial difficulty because they are considered “single.” Should they not be given the same chance, as married couples would have? Well, according to Lisa Bennet, a lady who once dated men and now in a homosexual relationship, she wanted to marry the person she loved. However, because of the restriction on same-sex marriages, she could not marry her partner legally. She states, “Love is love. In whatever shape it comes, it deserves respect.” (256) In her case, she was much happier in a homosexual relationship. Regardless of the law, she and her partner had a wedding of their own. However, she would much rather be married legally and physically to her partner.
