Should Public School's mandatory to wear uniforms?

Coming from a District of Columbia Public School I have seen or witnessed many cases of students getting robbed, stab, or even getting killed, for the shoes, coats, and different things they wear to school. My friend from junior high school was in a carryout ordering food and a person came up behind him and held a gun to his head and asked him for his money. The robber shot him four times took his Eddie Bauer coat and the two dollars he had in his pocket. Consequently, many D.C.P.S. have changed their dress code policy to a uniform only policy.
