Should Louis Riel Be considered a Father of Confederation?
...am would not have come true. And the Americans could have overthrown Canada. With only a small piece of Eastern Land, and a large piece of un- surveyed land Canada could have easily been invaded. Riel used the western land and turned it into a province and from that the west began to form. Riel’s sanity was questioned near the end of his life. Its true that he became even more religious and was calling himself a prophet. He claimed that he had a “mission” from God. His strict religious upbringing, and the years he spent training to become a priest were finally taking their toll. Many people think that he could not have been a prophet but maybe he was. Is it not common for a prophet to act “out of the ordinary”? For example Isaiah walked barefoot and naked, or Ezekiel who actually ate a scripture with the lords word on it. These people can be found spoken of in the old testament of the bible. If they could do these things without persecution, why couldn’t Riel create better lives for his people? Riel was responsible for the death of many people. But weren’t many of those people responsible for their own deaths? Did they not starve the aboriginals? Mistreat them? Did they not contribute to their own destruction? By doing the horrible things they did, they were asking for an attack and for some sort of retaliation. Riel was also a great contributor to aboriginal and metis rights. His provisional government helped to pass a bill of rights for the aboriginals and the metis. He managed to get the government...
