Short Story - The Attic

...Craig threw on a shirt and jeans and ran down the stairs, tripping over Morgan’s toys and he went. He squinted as the sunlight from the open door hit his face, it was the old woman that had just moved in next door “ Hello, I’m Gloria” she explained “form next door, I thought you might like some shortbread” she croaked and handed him a tray “thanks very much” he replied and shut the door on the old woman. He heard Morgan’s crying from the baby monitor and went up stairs to check on her, she chuckled when he picked her up “oh, I think somebody’s wanting their bottle aren’t they” he cooed at her, she replied with a toothless grin. He gave her bottle and put her back down to sleep. The only place he hadn’t yet been in the house was the attic so he climbed up the ladder and looked around there was something ere about it, the floorboards creaked and the lights flickered, it was like a scene from a horror movie. He heard footsteps coming from behind him, his heart was pounding and he was frozen to the spot with fear, an icy cold hand touched his shoulder and he spun round, he let out a sigh of relief it was only Gloria from next door. “What a fright you gave me” he scowled “ god don’t go sneaking up on people like that”. “Sorry, I was just looking up in my attic and I found a door that led through here, I had no idea it was your house” she apologized. Then walked of and clambered back through the small door. “What a strange old woman, bet she’s a witch or something” he thought to himself. He brought a cup of tea up to Susan, “come on get up you” he said pulling open the curtains. “ Some old woman from next door gave us some shortbread and I just found her lost in our Attic” he chuckled. Susan smiled, she looked knackered, no wonder with Morgan waking up four times that night. Craig went back down to the kitchen, the door was open. “If its that old woman again, I’m calling the police, she’s probably a burglar or something” he told himself.
