They want some pleasure or entertainment and by using ‘easy’ targets such as children they can con them into believing that what they have done is acceptable. But the main reason found by research, is of perpetrators growing up in abusive families or being assaulted as a child. They, in a way of dealing with it or getting back at the people who did it to them have to go through it again but not by being the victim but on the other side of the attack. Why is it tolerated/ not reported? It happens many times everyday and in most cases perpetrators get away with assaulting innocent victims. Reasons for this include victims being too scared to report cases, victims thinking that someone else will report a similar case, victims being told by offenders that what they have done is right and not knowing any better and even victims just ‘putting up with it’ thinking this is a once off case. These vulnerable children are tolerating sexual assault, as sometimes they have been not told about it, they have been misinformed and don’t know the facts about sexual assault. It is up to teachers and parents to teach and inform their children about what assault is at a young age so in the future they are not victims of these horrible offences and so more cases get reported to police. What are the possible consequences of this imbalance for the victim and the perpetrator? The three main possible effects of this imbalance for the victim are psychological damage, emotional and interpersonal damage and physical damage. Each victim will experience different consequences after attacks. The extent of each case and the personality of each individual usually determine what damage and effects the victim will incur. Consequences that perpetrators are likely to incur career damage from public knowledge, self esteem loss and sometimes imprisonment, compensation to the victim or community service, and unfortunately some perpetrators get excused from penalties, as their victims have not gone to he police to submit their case.
