For Kambei, he barely used any body language and he talked slowly and calmly which made him look a strategist who always know what to do in every situation in the battle. They also used special effects such as slow motion when the skilled samurai who does not talk very often was fighting another guy. When I was watching that part, I noticed how he holds his sword and how he keeps absolutely still after killing the guy. These little techniques helped me to understand every each one of the ¡°stock¡± characters in the movie. B.2. I think to be the ideal samurai is not just to have skills with weapons, or save people and be a hero, but to be the ideal samurai is to be the ideal samurai mentally, not just physically. In the book, The Samurai¡¯s Garden, Matsu is the ideal samurai. Matsu does not kill anybody to save people, but he does save people. Matsu took care of Sachi, and even built a house for her in Yamaguchi so she can start a new life. Even Sachi said, ¡°Who could know that Matsu would save my life. I always thought it would be Kenzo until that faithful day that Tomoko took her life.¡±(pg.78) She knew how difficult it had been for Matsu saving her life expecting to get nothing in return. When a person does something, he wants to get something in return. But an ideal samurai is not greedy and does things like saving people or help people just to see that they are saved, and that was what exactly Matsu did to Sachi. There is another ideal samurai in the movie, Seven Samurai, and that ideal samurai is Kambei, the leader of the samurai and the strategist. You can see why he is the ideal samurai from the beginning, when he agrees to help the farmers. Farmers explains to Kambei that they can only give him food and shelter in return and nothing else. At that time, even though samurai had lived by bushido, they all wanted to get a position that will bring him honor or fame such as fighting in a big battle and kill a lot of men so the king or other generals can see that.
