Compared to the boyhoods of most serial killers, Oliver's Twist’s early years in a Victorian poor house seem like an extended vacation at Disneyland. Little Charlie Manson’s mother was a bisexual alcoholic prostitute, who reportedly once traded her son for a pitcher of beer. After she was thrown in prison for armed robbery, a brutal uncle, who derided him as a sissy, and sent him to school in a dress, took in Manson. In later years, he was placed in an institution where he was routinely beaten with a wooden paddle for bed-wetting. One serial killer says this, referring back to his childhood: “ I hated all my life. I hated everybody. When I first grew up and can remember, I was dressed as a girl by my mother and I stayed that way for two or three years. And after that I was treated what I would call the family dog. I was beaten; I was made to do things that no human being would want to do.” (Henry Lee Lucas) Even though it’s impossible to predict if a young person will grow up to be a serial killer, there are three major danger signals. The first sign is enuresis, more commonly known as bed-wetting. Lots of children wet their beds but this behavior may be a sign of deeper pathology when it persists beyond the age of twelve. More then 60 percent of serial killers were still wetting their beds as adolescents. Fire starting is also one. Most kids like to play with matches, but budding serial killers carry this interest to a frightening extreme. Sadistic activity is the last sign. Before they are big enough to inflict harm on another human being, future serial killers got their kicks from tormenting small creatures. One serial killer proclaims: “I was born with the devil in me. I could not help that fact that I was a murderer, no more then a poet can help the inspiration to sing. I was born with the Evil One standing as my sponsor beside the bed where I was ushered into the world and he has been with me since” (Dr. H. H. Holmes) Another serial killer said: “I always had a desire to inflict pain on others and to have others inflict pain on me. I always seemed to enjoy everything that hurt.
