For example, when Elinor had to leave her lover, Edward Ferrars. But once they get situated in Barton Park, Elinor met a new man, and started a new life. Another example is when her older sister announced Mr. Ferrar’s engagement to Lucy. Elinor pitied him and moved. Time passed and the thought of him seemed replenish and they soon make up for his mistake. Now comes external conflict. The death of the three girl’s father is a major external conflict in this novel. It caused tension between their half brother and themselves. Also as a result of the inheritance going to John Dashwood, Henry’s second wife and their three girls would have to find another place to live because of their status. Also when Mr. Ferrar’s engagement to Lucy was announced, Elinor was quite upset. Her feelings were expressed by sharing his story with Marianne. Not only did Edward’s engagement provide external conflict, but also in ways, it became foreshadowing. As Elinor shared her story with Marianne, it made Marianne realize that she had behaved ...
