...ion: Your group will select a topic of your choice, formulate a discussion question and select a moderator. During your in-class presentation your group will follow the Dewey Sequence. Each group member will receive both an individual and a group grade. Each student must submit an annotated bibliography of 5 sources at the time of their presentation. A 2-3 page reaction paper will be due within a week of the group’s presentation. You will be given the format for the reaction paper. Speech of Definition: You will select a word, object, or concept and using 5 of the methods of definition develop a 4-5 minute speech. A complete sentence outline labeling the methods of definition and including 3 annotated bibliographic sources that are used in your speech will be needed. Speeches will be graded on delivery, organization, research, and outline. In order to receive credit, your outline is due at the time your speech is given. Speech of Demonstration: Using all the 7 pillars of support and 2 different types of visual aids, students will demonstrate a process for 4-5 minutes. You will need a complete sentence outline labeling the pillars of support and including 3 annotated bibliographic sources that are used in your speech will be needed. Speeches will be graded on delivery, organization, research, outlines and visual aids. In order to receive credit, your outline is due at the time your speech is given. Speech to Persuade: Using the Monroe Motivated Sequence, you will present a 7-8 minute speech designed to reinforce an existing policy or value. You will need a complete sentence outline labeling all the steps of Monroe’s Sequence in addition to 5 annotated bibliographic references that are used in your speech. Speeches will be graded on delivery, organization, research and outline. In order to receive credit, your outline is due at the time your speech is given. Critiques: You will be given the format to evaluate your videotaped speech and those of your fellow students. Critiques are due within a week of your presentation. WITHDRAWAL POLICY This term you may withdraw from this course before 10/28/02, with a W. If you remain in the course after that date, you will be given a grade. Throughout your community college career in Florida, you may accumulate only two W’s in any course, on your third attempt at any course in which you have two W’s you must be given a grade. Ask me if you have any questions about this policy. WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS I. The Vital Speech Assignment You will be given a guide sheet to follow for this assignment. There are 2 vital speech assignments. They are to be TYPED on 8 ˝ X 11 inch, white paper, one-side, one sheet only. Please be sure to attach a xerox copy of the speech that you are analyzing. VSA assignments must be TYPED and presented within the scheduled office hours of the day that they are due. Late papers will be accepted within a week of their due date and will be docked a letter grade. Your first VSA assignment may be re-written. By resubmitting a complete and correct VSA you can earn up to 10 additional points that will be added to your original grade. Your first Vital Speech Analysis may be considered a learning experience, where you learn my expectations for the quality and style of your work. Subsequent VSA assignments may NOT be re-written, so it is important that we communicate thoughtfully from the very beginning. Samples of the VSA assignment are available in building #3 beneath my mailbox in the inner office. (not the mailbox in the reception area). II. Exams: Unit test questions will be drawn from in class lectures and the text, “Building a Speech” by Sheldon Metcalfe. If you need special assistance in testing, please contact me prior to the test. Make-up exams will be permitted only in extreme instances and must be approved by the instructor. There will be a midterm and a final. IT IS VITAL TO YOUR SUCCESS THAT YOU TAKE NOTES IN CLASS. Not all of the material covered in your exams will be in the text. The exams are short essay. The format will remain consistent. I will ask you to list, describe, and give me an example of the concepts that we cover in class. For instance: A. List 3 ways to begin a speech, B. Give a written example of each, C. Which would you use in a speech to persuade an audience to wear their seat belt.
