The people didn’t take this the right way and thought it was only to aid the powerful way in which he spoke. On Election Day Dimmesdale gives a sermon. He climbs on the pillory with Hester and Pearl, his daughter, and reveals his sin. He shows his breasts and on it is the letter “A”, standing for adultery. Dimmesdale then dies on the pillory. The town, after building up all this respect for Dimmesdale, was dismayed by his acts of adultery. The Crucible can also be paired with this statement. Honest and upright, John Proctor is a good man, but one with a secret fatal flaw. Before the play begins, he has an affair with Abigail Williams even though he has a wife, Elizabeth. This sets an entire witch hysteria into motion. John Proctor hesitates to expose Abigail as a fraud because he worries that his secret will be revealed and his good name ruined. He tries to reveal the crucial information through Mary Warren’s testimony. This however doesn’t work and he bursts out into confession publicly admitting his guilt. He had only let Abigail build up a powerful rage and his confession had only led to his arrest and conviction as a witch.
