Scarface - The American Dream
...His duties include serving as chauffeur to Lopez's beautiful yet cocaine- addicted wife, Elvira. Tony develops an instant liking to Elvira. His other female obsession is his sister Gina. Tony's feelings for his sister are a bit on the incestuous side, and he dominates her, refusing to let her date. After a non-discussed business deal and an argument over Elvira, Lopez attempts to have Tony killed. Montana kills Frank’s assassins and escapes their attack. Tony then in turn murders Lopez, and takes his girl, Elvira as his own. At this time, there is a turning point in the movie. While Montana is smoking a cigar he gazes at a blimp in the sky that reads, “the world is mine.” It is obvious at this time that Tony feels he has “the power”, “he has the money”, and he now “has the girl.” This then gives him a feeling of invincibility as he display’s this attitude through the film. All was going well for Montana in the beginning. He was strolling in more money then he could count, into the bank. He marries Elvira, and owns a huge mansion in a remote area. He is getting everything he wanted in his life. But to what expense? Problems began to occur in multiples. Manny secretly dates and marries Gina (though warned not to). As a result of that, Tony finds out through the grapevine where Manny was living. Once Manny opens his doors and Tony sees him and his sister living there together Tony asked no questions; he murders him right in the doorway in cold blood, and though she’s reluctant to leave her dead husband, Tony takes his sister with him. His wife Elvira becomes increasingly zombie-like due to excessive drug abuse and she eventually leaves Tony as well. Then Tony gets arrested by the FBI under conspiracy to laundering an overflowing amount of money. To “add insult to injury” he has become a selfish, paranoid drug addict, who is now alone. To get himself out of hot water, Tony is called upon by his business partner, Sosa to do a “job” for him. He is asked to take out a spokesman who is a threat to Sosa and his constituents. One of Sosa’s workers is on the job with Tony and sets a bomb to blow up the spokesman’s car. At the climax of the job; when Sosa’s worker is about to blow the car up, Tony kills him due to the fact that there is a woman and kids in the car. (he refuses to kill a woman and her kids). News gets back to Sosa that the job was a failure and out of anger and a feeling of disloyalty, Sosa threatens Tony’s life and tells him his time to live is now limited. In the end, it all goes up in a hail of bullets and hellfire: Tony “Scarface” Montana was a man so obsessed with the American Dream, that he failed to realize It had consumed him in every way possible, and eventually brought him to his death. Below are some of the quotes from the film below. They are very graphic, but they will give you a blunt idea of my point as to what an individual will do from Tony Montana’s position to attain “The American Dream.” QUOTES FROM THE FILM Tony: You fuck with me, you fuck with the best! Tony: I kill a communist for fun. But for a green card, I'll carve him up real nice. Bernstein: Every day above ground is a good day. Tony Montana: I never fucked anyone over in my life who didn't have it coming to 'em. Tony: In this country, you gotta make the money...
