While right outside her cell was a rosebush that had been growing there since that town had been formed. It was truly the only shining point in a life that was filled with confusion and darkness. The rosebush is one of the few things that shine through the darkness in her bleak life. Having to be in jail with a baby that is only a couple days old and cannot physically harm you shows that you must have some hope in your life because you are not hurting the baby out of anger of you bad times. The Reverend Dimmsdale was another form of hope in her life because it showed she loved him while her life was unraveling before our eyes. That is really why she committed adultery because she was alone and Dimmsdale was the only person that she could get close to. Also Hester was Dimmsdale’s sign of hope too, he loved her so much that he abused himself by cutting himself and putting lives in danger on scaffolds. He loved her so much but he could not tell anyone that Hester and him had a affair together. The he died after sharing with everyone that he loved Hester. The rosebush being outside the jail only adds to the effect the jail only adds to the effect of it being a ray of hope in her life that is surrounded by darkness. She had just been convicted of adultery, her husband had just showed up, and she couldn’t have any contact with her lover in public while on the outside her dark life is this beautiful rosebush that represents hope and everything good that is going to happen in her life. Not only does this rosebush represent hope, but how good things will happen in her life. The rosebush shows that her life is about to turn around and shows that all the people hated her just for loving someone else who also showed love back to her, while her husband was back in Europe that is about thirty years older than her. This doesn’t make it right for committing adultery, but her husband should have put her in a position like that. The rosebush shows that it will get her threw this dark moment in her life. The Last thing that portrayed hope in Hester’s life is the needles she used while sewing embroidery, this shows she has the skills to hold on to a job and wont be a strain on society that already dislikes her from expressing her actions and love for another person. It also shows that she can live a normal life that doesn’t include doing menial jobs that degrade her and hurt he reputation even further. She made such beautiful clothes for the town people that they basically forgot they had been shunning her for years before committing adultery with someone that she had loved.
