They had the blue-helmeted troops stationed in Rwanda to help uphold the peace, but as soon as things got rough, they were out of these faster than a bat out of hell. When the Hutu began their rampage thorough the country, they were nowhere to be seen. One U.N. unit was protecting a school of Tutsis, whom numbered approximately 2,000, and were simply ordered to leave. When they were gone, all, or nearly all of the Tutsis were killed in a violent clash of steel and flesh. On January 11th, 1994, the U.N. dismissed a warning from the commander of peacekeeping troops on Rwanda, which they received three months before the killings. The U.N. knew in advance that the Hutu were planning to wage war, and did nothing at all about it. All the U.N. had to do was keep a handful of troops in the country, and they could have saved hundred of thousands of lives. It’s hard to believe that our own country could be responsible for so many avoidable deaths. The US knew what was going on in Rwanda, but simply refused to call it genocide. If they called it so, we would have been legally obliged to act to prevent and punish the killings. The United States also blocked the U.N. security console from deploying an effective force. This was partially due to the U.S. losing 18 soldiers in Somalia just 5 months earlier, and they didn’t want to risk any more casualties. Just for the hell of it, lets just say the U.S. intervened and had say, 100 casualties (Body armor and rifles lose to knives and pitchforks?)
