... The Payne Aldrich tariff was the first reason that Roosevelt decided to run for president again. This is when conservative Senator Nelson Aldrich attached 800 amendments onto the house bill. It was designed to cover up higher tariff rates. Roosevelt did not like this because when it finally reached Taft’s desk, the bill was already carrying out the demands of lobbyists instead of the people. He believed that you should try to make things better for the people. This was only the beginning of Roosevelt’s dislike of Taft’s Presidency. The next reason was the Ballinger Pinchot Affair. This was a conflict between Richard A. Ballinger and Gifford Pinchot, the chief forester. Pinchot accused Ballinger of fraud. He was believed to have reopened certain lands in Montana, Wyoming, and Alaska for private purchase. Taft supported Ballinger and believed that he was innocent. People viewed Taft’s action to dismiss Pinchot was viewed against the conservation effort which was started by Roosevelt. This angered Roosevelt because he went against the conversationalists views. He thought that Ballinger was guilty and couldn’t believe Taft’s actions. The final reason that Roosevelt decided to run for president in the 1912 election was Taft’s support of Joseph Cannon, the speaker of the House of Representatives.
