The main participants were slaves and criminals, butt there were also common people who volunteered their services. They were hoping to get popular off of the fame of winning. Unfortunately many died trying. Not only did people fight each other, they often wound up fighting wild animals like bears, buffalos, and many other animals. These games were not only for entertainment purposes, but it promoted the want for blood that aided in the need for political warfare. It taught people that bloodshed was normal and that it was tolerated. The accomplishment for this was for the political rulers to keep the citizens content while Rome was having its problems. In today’s society our entertainment is quite different. The norms of society would not allow bloodshed to be watched, due to the corruption of children.
