Roll of thunder hear my cry (Mildred D Taylor)
...wn the hill leaving them standing in the ditch , the Logan children would often look back at the bus with total disbelief as the white children shouted abuse at them. This is clearly shown from the following passage. "As moronic rolls of laughter and cries of 'Nigger! Nigger! Mud eater!' wafted from the windows." I think over all that Mildred has conveyed the evil of racism in education really well, using different similes, adjectives and showing it's effect on the children. Mildred Taylor again shows the evil and suffering of racism in the law. An example taken from the book is that of when T.J was arrested. He was wrongly accused of hurting the Barnetts and the only one accused of breaking in and stealing from the shop in Strawberry. We know from the text that he shouldn't have been the only one accused because two white boys R.W and Melvin were also involved. As R.W and Melvin are white they were not convicted instead they were just let off with a warning. Unfortunately for T.J he will be sentenced and maybe hung all because he is black. Mildred Taylor has brought the racial prejudice to my attention cleverly as she reveals the confusing life of the Logan girl Cassie as she grows up into a young lady learning and understanding more about her 'superiors' (the white people). Some good evidence I have extracted from the book shows the racial prejudice and the way in which Mildred Taylor shows it through the eyes of the girl Cassie; "They wouldn't do that to ole T.J! He can talk his way outa just bout anything! Besides, he ain't done nothing that bad. It was the Simmses! Tell them that! Oh P-Papa d-does it have to be?" "All I can say, Cassie girl… is that it shouldn't be." Later on in the text Mildred Taylor again shows the cruelty of racial prejudice through he eyes of the young girl Cassie. This time it is Mr Barnett's store. She and her brothers were waiting to be served but as soon as a white person walks in needing served the Logans are automatically forgotten about and put to the back of the queue. Not knowing and understanding why Cassie gets annoyed and confronts Mr Barnett. This was a shock to the girl Mr Barnett was serving as the text says, " the girl looked at me strangely," I like the way in which Mildred Taylor has opened our eyes to racial prejudice through the eyes of a young girl. I think it is very effective in conveying the evil of racism. The Logan family are very lucky as they own their own land on which they grow cotton and make a small profit. Mildred Taylor emphasises this as they are one of few black families who own their own land. Many black families in order to survive are sharecroppers up at Mr Granger's Plantation. This is where they work for Mr Granger and in return they get housed and fed. This may sound like a good deal but it isn't. Sharecroppers aren't treated very good and this is shown through the book. An example of the text about the two Avery boys whom are from a family of sharecroppers give a good example of how they are treated, "Neither boy had shoes on, their Sunday clothing, patched and worn, hung loosely upon their frail frames." The use of a variety of adjective makes this piece of writing stand out and again I like it because it creates a picture in your head, I think that once again Mildred h...
