He set up his first mill in Nottingham, in which horses supplied the power for his spinning frame. In 1771 he invented a new spinning machine at Cromford in a larger mill, which was driven by waterpower. This machine was very big and was a huge success and was the main reason for him being knighted. His success was due also to his kind way of management and labor, which was fair to all workers, was liked by other factory and mill owners and sparked a new kind of kindness to workers across the country. In 1782 he took in an apprentice called Samuel Slater, who was born in Belper, England. He learnt a lot of things from Arkwright.
