...h and prink!” The wife is tired of how the man only focuses on outer beauty. The woman believes she has a right to freely read and to expand her knowledge, not just focus on her beauty. His desire to have only a wife with good looks, no intellectual depth, and her opposing opinion, is a main contributor to their failing marriage. Similarly, the man considers the woman property, and their contradictory views on that idea, also breaks up the relationship. At the end of the poem, the woman says, “I shall be gone and you may whistle for me,” implying she was treated like a dog, or, property. No woman, including her, would enjoy being treated as a possession, and because her regards her as so, she wants to leave the relationship. Because the woman possesses a mind of her own, not controlled by her husband, she believes she should be treated with respect. Unfortunately, the selfish, piggish husband does not respect his wife, and their opinions clash, causing the marriage to further breakdown. Furthermore, the man wants a “wife to pattern by”. Because no women are exactly the same, meaning, no wife can be exactly the same, this idea is ridiculous.
