Baldwin explains that the experience we lack in life leads us to not know who we are and unable to communicate effectively with others. In Baldwin's case, his voage to Paris enabled him to realize that location made no differenc in the quality of his life and that a closer examination of himself was what was needed. People who are lucky enough to "go to pieces and then put themselves back together with whatever was left." are the most enlightened of citizens and when they return to society they are also the lonliest of citizens.
