That's because without religion there would be no law. Without some sort of moral obligations tyranny and anarchy would result. Nobody would be able to enforce a set of values because values wouldn't exist. Religion is not membership in a church, it's a set of beliefs that you find yourself so passionately drawn to that you can't help but live your life according to those beliefs.
