...ng a battle broke out when the red pawns, this was the name that was given to the Indians that helped the English. Both Manly and Peter survived the battle and got the adventure that they both were hoping for out of the battle, which is now known as the War of 1812. CHARACTER SKETCH The character Manly Treegate was the person that all of the stories in the book were based on. He is an eighteen-year-old man that starts on a ship and shows his intelligence early in the book. In one of the first scenes he is on a ship that is threatened by some English soldiers, but when Manly points out the fact that the water condensation had dampened the gun powder so the guns wouldn’t fire, the soldiers back off. This shows his intelligence and ability to stay cool in dangerous situations. Also he is a go- getter, he wants to be part of the war so he set off to defend his country and his freedom. He was very enthusiastic about the war, he didn’t wait for the war to start, and he went out to the west at the first sign of danger.
