Recipe for Writing

...stakes here and there but its so much quicker when you can go back and just delete a letter instead of erasing it, making all those grayish-black smudges on the paper, or having lines crossed out in the paragraph 4 or 5 times. Computers. Word processors. Some of the greatest inventions known to man, especially in my case. I love computers, and in my writing, the use of a computer is essential. I’ve been told that I type almost 100 words per minute, with very few mistakes and I’m proud of it. Typing papers is so much easier especially when you are a procrastinator such as myself. My mother always said, “Computers were going to be useful in my life.” I am quite sure that the majority of my writings, whether it be poetry or a short story, have come from scratch sitting at a computer the night before a paper was due, similar to this one. Research papers are somewhat different, in a way the research is already done because its best to do research when you first get an assignment and perhaps the first 2 or 3 pages as well, however I stay awake all night trying to get it completely done. Then there’s just my free writing. What is it that I actually want to write about? Most of the time, things I’m feeling or things I’ve seen people go through, for example pregnancies, births, deaths, loves: new and old, lost and found. Sitting around waiting for an idea to come to me and then suddenly, “I come up with a premise, write the first chapter, and throw myself off the edge of a cliff to see what happens! I truly entertain myself with the story as I go along”, as does romance writer Susan Elizabeth Phillips. That’s the key to my writing. I can remember so many papers that I’ve had to write and many of them were quality papers however some of them were written quickly and poor without any clear thought. I cant advise anyone as to when the best time to write is although for me best time for me to write is late at night, when the moon is shining and the majority of the house or dorm is quiet.
