(Jerome Commentary) She must insure this. When Esau and Jacob are born, as they grow, Isaac favors his first-born son, Esau. Rebekah then, will come to favor Jacob. (Genesis 25:28) It is thought, maybe, that Isaac favors Esau the way his father, Abraham, favored his older son, Ishmael. Maybe it tears at Isaac, and so, through favoring his eldest, he hopes to please Abraham. (Card) Mitchell 2 These ill feelings may have been what led Rebekah to the deception of her husband. (Card) Should she be judged for tricking him into blessing his second son? Why was it that she claimed such bold alliance to Abraham’s God (Card), and yet was able to sin so easily by coercing Jacob into lying and tricking his father? Mr. Orson Scott Card, author of Rebekah, Women of Geneses, states that “…good people can sometimes do bad things to those they love most…people doing the best they can often get it wrong, and all you can do afterward is try to ameliorate the damage and avoid the same mistakes in the future.” This is a good, possible explanation of Rebekah’s actions.
