When Dennis was killed responding to a fire in a run down part of town Derek’s hatred exploded into reality. Derek’s hatred leads him to murder and to three years in prison. He murdered three armed African American while they were attempting to steal his car. While Derek is in prison he comes to realize that everything Cameron Alexander taught him was completely false. Lamont, an inmate at the prison, helps Derek understand that not all people from the same race are the same. Robert Sweeny, Derek’s former high school Principal also had a great impact on Derek’s change in opinion. Reality of Racism American History X is a fictional movie. However, were the events that happen in the movie to occur in real life the outcome of the movie would be very similar to the outcome in real life. American history X is about a neo-nazi, or skinhead, group lead by Cameron Alexander. Cameron gives false lead to teenagers who have lost their way in life. He teaches them ways of white supremacy and other racist themes. The story is based around the family of Derek Vineyard, who Cameron decides would be the spokesperson for the D.O.C.
