reader response - unicorn in the garden and lamb to the slaughter
...booby’. This action shows she didn’t respect her husband. She is also an obnoxious wife, because she quickly dressed up and telephoned the police and the psychiatrist to inform about her husband. Most probably, she is saying that her husband is crazy. I do sympathize with the husband because I assumed he’d been cheated by his wife. What the author is trying to express through this story is one can’t think that, a stupid person is stupid; instead, they have their own ability that others may not see. In the end, there us a twist in this story where the police and psychiatrist subdued her. She must be thinking that she’s going to win the game that she had planned, and I feel very satisfied with the ending of the story. As the idiom says, ‘as smart as a squirrel jump, in the end it will falls’. Maybe through this story, it leave me a bad impression to the wife as she is very rude and keep saying irritating words to her husband. “…You are a booby…and I am going to have you put in the booby-hatch…” I think it is not suitable for kids to read this story because it may bring them towards the negative attitude which shows by the wife. ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’ written by Roald Dahl, is also about a relationship between a husband and his wife. But there is a contrast between ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’ and ‘Unicorn in the Garden’. As I continue reading, I found the conflict between Mary Maloney and her husband began when one day, when the husband came home and announced he was having an affair and wanted a divorce. As a reader, I think it’s unfair for Mary Maloney, if her husband asked for divorced from her during pregnancy. To me, she plays her responsible as a wife very well. “… If you are tired to eat out,” she went on “it’s still not too late. There is plenty of meat and stuff in the freezer and you can have it right here and not even move out of the chair,…” Although she is pregnant, she still does the housework.
