Racism: A look a Memmi's work
...s not always connected with race. Sometimes people turn to racism if they want to revenge somebody, or when they want to feel better about themselves. Everyone looks for an inferior rank compared to which he appears. Racism indeed offers everyone the most convenient solution; one needs only find someone smaller, more humiliated than himself, and there he has his victim, the target for his scorn, prejudice, and hatred. Memmy was very right when he said that “racism is a pleasure within everyone’s reach”. Finally, the last but not least point which I would like to discuss is that the fight against racism coincides, at least partly, with the fight against oppression. If we want to end racism, we (anti-racists) won’t be able to it by ourselves. The oppressed man must cease to be oppressed, and the oppressor must stop being an oppressor. Only in that case, when this will happen, we will be able to establish peace. Before starting the conversation about “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, I would like to say how much I respect Martin Luther King. I think that he is a genius of justice. He is one of the best speakers in the whole world history. And his ideas about “justice and equality for all” are more than great. I can’t go really deep into this because I can write 100 pages about him, but I will comment upon few, but very important facts.
