(Pg. 63-64) When I read this quote, I felt bewildered and was quite shocked. I never imagined that hearing horses cry could be so torturesome for the soldiers fighting at the front. I’m not sure as to why the soldiers would react this way: sympathy for the horses agonizing pain; the death cries that echo and come from them; or because the soldiers realize that the horses are purely innocent creatures that have been forced to be a part of this catastrophic war: seeing them die is like watching a baby drown. Something even more ghastly about the quote is the fact that it alludes to the fact that soldiers are more susceptible to watching horses die than men. Even though Paul and his company cannot understand the tongues of other animals (presuming that they even have tongues), they understand pain, and the horses described here epitomize it.
