... reality. The boy takes on the role of a phony. When it really comes down to it reality is always going to remain dominant because it is the only thing that exists. Therefore the girl is the only one telling the story because the boy no longer remains a part of her life. The poem is set in no specific time or place other than a time when society has their perfect image of a girl. There is a predominant atmosphere that suggests disappointment from both the girl and the boy. The girl is sad that the boy will not accept who she is and the boy is sad that she will not change. It suggests that love is not as easy as one would want it to be. The setting of disappointment and reality balances quite well. The atmosphere that is created through this balance definitely reinforces the theme. As long as someone keeps on trying to change who they are or who somebody else is, society will never be able to move on. Reality will be non existent to the majority as long as they believe in the false hopes and ideas that perfection actually exists. Major’s poem is a satire of reality versus fiction. She uses imagery quite effectively. Major allows the reader to picture the fairy tale beauties through her descriptive and figurative language. She explains the fairy tale images down to the very last detail making it easy to imagine in one’s mind. Her sentences are simple and short keeping a poetic flow in them. The simplicity suggests that people can be just like the sentences. People do not have to be glamourous and unreal to be happy. Major uses very straightforward words to get her point across as easily as possible. There is no window dressing, just short, sweet and simple the same way people should be. Margaret Atwood’s “There Was Once”is also a satire. It raises the same issues as a “Puce Fairy Book” but in a different light. The title actually suggests the abandonment of the idea of perfection and stereotypes. It talks about these issues in past tense as if it they are non existent. Atwood like Major uses a fairy tale to get her theme across. She uses this fairy tale as her recurring image to better understand the false ideals. The line that best summarizes that fairy tales are unrealistic is “It’s not a right image of our society, today.”(Atwood 57) The little red riding hood being discussed cannot exist in today’s society. All of these stereotypes and ideas of perfection are dropped and everything remains politically correct. The character she uses does not change but she is ready for the political correctness. Atwood’s main character is trying to make others realize that the perfect image does not exist and it never will just like Major’s is. The characters are realistic but the boy yet again does not want to admit to the imperfections. He wants to imagine the perfect image because it’s easier that way.
