... ordinary characters he seemed to always match his music to what those characters were feeling or what was their destiny and this instinct for realism is what really distinguishes Puccini among the entire operatic community. However, not all of Puccini’s work reflect a storyline that people can actually relate back to their own lives. For example, Madame butterfly portrays a woman experiencing realistic feelings that are expressed through the music and the acting in a realistic way but the situations that she was in were not something that most audience members would have any sort of connection with. Puccini’s audience wouldn’t have been a community of people who would end up commiting suicide for their son’s honor but they could probably relate to the feeling of hopelessness and despair that she expressed. So while madame butterfly does incorporate the realistic emotions that are characteristic of Puccini’s operas its plot line was all but a normal situation. Most of Puccini’s operas follow these same extreme sort of situations with all but ordinary characters in mostly extraordinary situations.
