The SOGS testing demonstrates that 9.4% of men and 2.3% of women registered in the category of potential pathological gamblers. The SOGS testing were conducted using undergraduate students from two Minnesota universities. The participants were predominantly Caucasian (95%), ages 19-22 years old (73%) and equally distributed over the four years of school. There were slightly more female participants (52%) than males. The SOGS testing that was completed relied on self-reported data from the participants, unfortunately, and the results cannot be completely validated. The number of gamblers participating in the different areas of gambling has been equal, except in bingo where men have scored higher than the women (winters et al., 1998). A recent study by Lightsey and Hulsey (2002) also revealed a higher gambling rate in men than in women. As well as positive correlation between gambling and impulsivity was discovered. The participants in this study were student volunteers attending a southern university. As well the participation from females (51%) was slightly higher than the males. The SOGS survey, used in the previous study, was used again with these participants to calculate gambling habits with these individuals. The female participants (66%) reported no gambling in their lifetime. This study has shown that impulsivity has increased rates of gambling in men and has had no effect on women’s gambling rates (Lightsey and Hulsey, 2002). The...
