Eventually, as farmers started to focus on harvesting grains, new techniques and inventions were discovered. As to what Paul Zane Pilzer once said, ¡§Prosperity belongs to those who learn new things the fastest¡¨, farmers in the west was devoted in their responsibilities and are eager to discover new ways to help their work. Farms became more and more mechanized. New chilled-steel ploughs made it easier for farmers to slice through sod. Gasoline-driven tractors began to replace horses and enabled farmers to finish larger parcels of land with less effort. Moreover, during springtime, improved harrows and seed-drills made planting faster and efficient. In autumn, newly developed threshing machines helped farmers reap large harvests before the first snowfall. Furthermore, not only farmers help benefit themselves, but others too. Scientists developed hardier, high-yield grains that could mature within the short growing season. Such varieties include Red Fife, Red Calcutta, Garnet, Reward, and especially Marquis. As luck would have it, it is estimated that, by 1918, Marquis wheat added about one hundred million every year to Canadian farmers¡¦ income. The growth of wheat farming was considered the most profitable occupations in Canada. Conceivably, as they farmers began to harvest larger amount of wheat, the demands of wheat and became more popular internationally. Undoubtedly, as wheat farming began to develop, Canadian wheat became well known throughout Canada, United States, and Europe.
