Also, in Washington, A Committee on Public Information was formed whose purpose was to get Americans behind the war. It employed over 150,000 people and used posters, and pamphlets, and billboards to get the message out. Even movies were made to show the Germans as animals and beasts. A lot of songs were also written about the war. All these things got Americans rallying behind the troops. Another reason there was patriotic commitment to the war was because of American workers, whose motto was “labor will win the war”. There was also a War Department rule that said either you work or fight. All these things created a strong sense of patriotism. Opponents of the war were seen as traitors because the Americans had become so emotionally involved in their commitment to the war. They believed the propaganda and felt unified in their cause. Opponents threatened this solidarity. Even ministers got into this and one, Dr. William Quayle basically said the German people were conducting murder (B1). He even said Germans had stolen things from kids and had bombed hospitals, things that may not have happened. He was educated so anyone hearing him probably thought he was telling the truth. American Germans were seen as suspicious and as the anti-German feeling got stronger, these Germans were not safe.
