Project

... were very plain and very similar and I decided I wanted something a little bit more interesting and different. Construction (a) Planning I started my project by drawing a sketch of the unit clearly showing all the measurements needed. From this drawing I was able to see clearly the measurements of every part of my project throughout the construction process. When fully happy with the drawing and measurements I began by cutting the wood. (b) Sides, top and bottom The top, bottom and sides were the first few pieces I began to put together. Using the bench saw, I cut six pieces of red deal, 70mm wide, for each side. I then cut biscuit joints in the sides of each piece. This would add strength to the wood when glued and stop excessive warping. I glued the six pieces and then clamped them together where they were left to dry overnight. The next day I removed the clamps and planed any uneven joinings the pieces were then sanded down to give a smoother finish. Using a compass I marked the curves at the top of the piece and then cut it out using a jigsaw. I drew up a template for the design at the bottom of the piece and traced it onto the wood using carbon paper and again cut it out using a jigsaw. The top and the bottom were cut and glued in the same way as the sides. (c) Drawers The main part of the drawer is made simply from plywood. From a sheet of 10mm thick plywood I cut six pieces (790mm x 230mm), six pieces (390 x 230) and 3 pieces (810 x 390) this was enough wood to make three drawers. The pieces were simply screwed together and then a runner attached to both sides of each drawer. The next step was to make fronts for the drawers using more red deal. These fronts were cut and glued in the same way as the sides described in section (b). I then marked a simple design on these fronts and using the router I routered them out. I attached these fronts to the already assembled drawers using screws and glue. The small drawers on the top of the project were done in much the same way but instead of using plywood I used ordinary red deal and I did not put on any runners because these drawers are more for ornament than practical use. (d) Assembly When I had all the pieces together I began to assemble the whole unit. Using the router I made slots on the sides for the top and bottom to fit into when I was sure th...
