pro Wrestling
...evision show dedicated to violence and destruction. Professional wrestling promotes violence and attracts a large audience. Most of the audience of professional wrestling probably understands that it is all fake; however, there are always some people in any given audience that take the scenes presented to them on television and attempt to reenact them on their own. I have seen several of these cases on the news and the good thing about a news show is that they show the consequences of such action. One recent story that came on in Atlanta showed a home video of some teenagers attempting a stunt that they saw on Music Television (MTV) where a professional stuntman jumped in the air and another professional stuntman drove a car underneath the first. The teenagers who attempted to reproduce this stunt were not so lucky and the “jumper” ended up in the morgue after the whole thing was over. I cannot say whether or not professional wrestling has this effect on its audience however, I must conclude that there is more than a remote possibility. Simply put, some portion of any given audience will attempt to reproduce what they see on television in real life and could cause serious injury or death to anyone in the vicinity. Violence on this scale goes against what our great country was founded on. Sure, America goes to war and fights against people but the underlying reason for America going to war is not entertainment but peace and freedom from violence. Fire has to be fought with fire. Professional wrestling goes against the morals that this great country was founded on. Professional wrestling goes against social morals set forth in all civilized communities around the world. Even in ancient Rome, there were fights to the death and they were for the entertainment of the general public but there was a fundamental difference. The difference between ancient Rome and today’s professional wrestling is that in Rome, people condemned to death were the fighters and everything was real, nothing was fake. When prisoners condemned to die fight to the death, they are doing two things. First, they are killing themselves and thereby taking the burden off of the state to kill them and second, they provide a source of entertainment for the public and they show the public what will happen if they break laws. The consequences for breaking laws in ancient Rome were simple, people fought to the death. Everybody knew this and it helped to provide order in Rome. There is no way in which professional wrestling could possibly prevent violence because that is all that professional wrestling is. There are no subtitles that tell the audience “not to try this at home” and no one comes on the television and vocally expresses to the audience that what you are seeing is not real but instead professional actors. Maybe the audience is supposed to know that however, people are dumb, a person is smart, meaning that it is possible that an entire crowd of people could be riled up into a large fight over professional wrestling. The actors appear to have complete hate for each other and when they are fighting they will do almost anything to get a rise out of the audience and some of the things that they do are completely wrong and should have some penalties. I grew up in the church and I have been raised with what I would call ‘good’ morals. Sure, I have done my fair share of things that I am not proud of and regret however, I have never done anything on near the magnitude of what professional wrestling has accomplished for our society. I was taught to love my neighbor and my enemy however, in professional wrestling, there is no love...
