Privatizing the Public School System

For example, in an experiment conducted by the School Choice Scholarships Foundation, they found that students from a low-income neighborhood who went to private school scored two points higher in reading and math on achievement tests than children from the same area that went to public school (Peterson). Moreover, privatizing some schools would lead the public schools to raise their standards of education to try and compete with the private schools. The private schools and public schools would begin to compete for the best teachers and resources, resulting in better education in private schools and public schools as well (Finn). The use of vouchers, which allow parents to use public money to pay for private school, would challenge the public school system because families would no longer be captives of their local schools. It would force public schools to shape up and deliver the level of excellence that society is demanding (Giraitis). It has been found that “greater private school competitiveness significantly raises the quality of public schools, as measured by the educational attainment, wages, and high school graduation rates of public school students. Competition among private schools only serves to improve the overall education to America’s youth” (Haxby). For another thing, privatizing a good amount of the public schools gives parents a choice. Formerly, families who were not financially well off had no choice but to send their children to public school. Privatizing and the use of vouchers would give every student a fair chance to be in an environment that best suited his learning needs (Light). Parents could choose the school that would give their child the best education.
