Another situation in which there was a discovery was when Elizabeth realized what kind of person Charlotte Lucas really was. Elizabeth thought that Charlotte wasn't really into the whole marriage thing. Charlotte felt that happiness in marriage was by chance. It also just so happened to be that Charlotte wasn't one of the most attractive girls. One of the most conceited characters in the novel, Mr. Collins, was originally interested in Elizabeth, but she rejected him and he was mortified. Then he decided to move on to Charlotte because it was a perfect situation for him. His circumstances made it a most eligible match for Charlotte considering he was a very wealthy man. Then all of a sudden Charlotte's view on marriage changed. She realized that she couldn't get any better and wanted to engage in the marriage as soon as possible. Elizabeth had always felt that Charlotte's opinion of matrimony was not exactly like her own, but she could not have supposed it possible that, when called into action, she would have sacrificed every better feeling to worldly advantage. She felt that the marriage between the two was humiliating -- And to the pang of a friend disgracing herself and sunk in her esteem, was added the distressing conviction that it was impossible for that friend to be tolerably happy in the lot she had chosen. In a way this was exciting because Austen made it an all of a sudden thing. Elizabeth rejected Mr. Collins and then about three days later he is proposing to Charlotte because it would in fact better his and her situation. One last example of a psychological event was the awakenings of the way Elizabeth truly feels about Darcy and Darcy realizing his true character. Darcy wrote Elizabeth a letter explaining everything about Wickham and his true feelings for her, after realizing the kind of person that he is.
