Pretty Woman
...age at the end of this movie that is “This is Hollywood, land of dreams. Some dreams come true, some do not.” Nobody knows when luck comes, but people, particularly the audience should keep on dreaming. If luck comes some days, it may change their lives. Therefore, Hollywood is a place to have more chances to get luck and to make dreams come true because there are many companies and wealthy people around. Additionally, Hollywood is a wealthy place with expensive shopping areas, fantasy hotels. The director portrays Edward as a successful and wealthy man. He owns a company and stays in Beverly Hills. This city in Los Angeles is a small town for the wealthy and is a place for the fortunate to live in comfort, to shop and to dine at their leisure. Furthermore, there are expensive clothing stores on Rodeo Drive. These stores only serve wealthy people who may drop a hundred thousand dollars in a single visit. When Edward gives Vivian money to buy her clothing for a dinner, she goes to one of the stores on Rodeo Drive, but nobody serves her because she does not look like a rich woman even though she has money in her pocket. Furthermore, the Beverly Hills hotel, which is a fantasy hotel, mostly serves rich people. Edward stays there for a week. However, when Vivian comes back to the hotel, a manager of the hotel, Thompson, does not allow her to get into the room while Edward is not there because she does not look like his guests. Therefore, the director wants to portray real things that happen in Hollywood. Nevertheless, Marshall attracts the audience by fantasy and richness. He does not show reality in California. In contrast, director of Traffic, Steven Soderbergh, portrays California as a convenient path for drug dealers to sell drug. This director simply tries to show the situations of illegal drugs. This occurs in California. In fact, California also has many criminals and murders. Furthermore, director of Menace II Society, Roger Ebert, portrays Caine as a young black man with a good nature and a quick intelligence, but he turns out to be a small drug dealer because he grows up in a bad environment. The society of California contains bad and good things, but Marshall only portrays California in Pretty Woman as a fairytale. It might be because he sees more horrible things than good things in California. It may be because he may see many people are stressed in their daily lives and live in terrible neighborhoods. Therefore, he decided to portray California’s positive side. This might make the audience feel better and keep dreaming. If one day they meet some wealthy people, their lives might change for the better. Even though the society of California is not a heaven, Marshall makes Pretty Woman seem unrealistic. According to “Awards & Nominations,” Julia Roberts was nominated for the British Academy Awards and an Academy Award in 1990 for Best Actress. She also won the Golden Globe for best actress in 1991. She really shines in this movie. Richard Gere was nominated for the Golden Globe in 1991 for Best Actor (Musical or Comedy). He has a sleepy-eyed style and is Hollywood’s most successful male sex symbol. He seems to work well with material.
