Pretend You Don’t See Her
... away not able to break back into the house. She found Isabelle dying on the floor, but Isabelle was able to give her commands. Isabelle told Lacey to give “the real journal” to Jimmy Landi and make a copy for herself. Curtis had taken a fake copy. A few moments later, Isabelle was dead. Lacey was now a key witness. After the police came to the murder site, they found a fingerprint, and matched it to Sandy Savarano, a notorious hit man. He had had plastic surgery and had supposedly killed himself. He was back and after Lacey, the only witness that could ID him to the scene. Lacey thought nothing of the incident and thought that the murderer would eventually be caught. That all changed, though, when she was followed to her sister Kit’s house and her niece, Bonnie, was shot in the arm. Lacey agreed to join the witness protection program until Sandy was caught. She went to a center in Washington D.C. for three months where the government destroyed her past and made up her new identity. She was not allowed to tell anyone her whereabouts and could only talk to her family on secure mail and phone lines. Lacey was moved to a small apartment in Minneapolis with a new name, Alice Carroll. Jimmy Landi was a powerful businessman. His partner, Steve Abbot, was a college dropout who he trusted…until the end of the book. Lacey had given the police the original copy of the journal in order to avoid any conflicts with the law. She thought that the journal would be safe there, until parts of the journal became missing. Detective Sloane, the local law enforcement leader, had a hunch that the journal had been taken by a two-timer. In Minneapolis, Lacey started to do many of the things she normally did in New York, but with a new identity. She joined a health club, applied for a job in home real estate, and continued to study a secret copy of Heather’s journal. She realized that Tom Lynch, a radio host, was included in the journal and that he lived in Minneapolis and so she decided to track him down and find answers. The faster Sandy was caught, the sooner she would be able to return home. Lacey discovered that Tom Lynch went to the same health club as her. They formed a relationship and Lacey met Lynch’s cousin, Kate. Kate knew a little about Heather because they had been in the same Broadway production before. She knew that before Heather died, she was very scared and tense around Richard Parker Jr. As this information was revealed Richard Parker Jr. disappeared mysteriously. It was later found out, though, that he had just gone to a drug rehabilitation center. Lacey told her mother two forbidden things. She told her she was in Minneapolis and that she had joined a health club. Both could lead to her discovery and death. Sandy was given tips on Lacey’s whereabouts by a waiter named Carlos. Carlos worked for Alex Carbine, Mona Farrell’s boyfriend and had overheard one of Mona’s conversations with Alex. After learning this, Sandy quickly went to Minneapolis to find Lacey. He disguised himself as “Alice’s” father who needed her back home. Lacey learned that someone had been inquiring her whereabouts. Sandy was in Minneapolis! She quickly drove to the airport without bringing anything but money and the journal. Lacey took a plane to Chicago, then to Boston, and finally to New York. She was avoiding two people, Sandy and the unreliable cops. She had been discovered, and they had done nothing. Sandy was just a few seconds late. When he arrived at Lacey’s apartment no one was there. He knew she had left. Sandy quickly took an airplane to Ne...
