...rganizations arose in response to the spread of communist beliefs to the weaker European countries and the possible influx of communist morals to the United States. The most important of these documents and organizations were the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, and NATO. Truman first executed the containment policy in reaction to two communist threats from Eastern Asia. The first of these threats was a Communist-lead uprising against the Greek government and the second was the Soviet demands for some control of Turkey’s Dardanelles. In what became known as the Truman Doctrine, Harry Truman asked Congress for four hundred million dollars to aid the innocent peoples of Greece and Turkey both economically and militarily against communist influences. Later that year, George Marshall and Harry Truman introduced the Marshall Plan, which would provide the weak European countries with seventeen billion dollars to keep them self-sustained and free of communist influences. The plan worked accordingly, bringing self-sustaining growth to Western Europe and more prosperity to the United States as they shipped their goods to Europe. Finally, in NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the United States joined with eleven other nations, including Canada, in an alliance, which would serve as a military alliance to defend all members from attack.
