...sh Army and is more on the side of Gerry. The selection of detail that Sheridan uses in this scene manipulates the audience into feeling against the British Army but this is only because we don’t actually see an IRA sniper attack any of the British Army. When we do see the IRA the viewer is positioned to see them as more reasonable as we are told that when they threaten to shoot Gerry and his friends that they have given them several warnings before about the trouble they have been causing. We then see that even after telling Gerry that they are going to shoot them they don’t as Guiseppe tells and not to and they respect his wishes. So at the beginning the movie the viewer is positioned and has been manipulated towards being on the side of the Irish and Gerry even though Gerry is a thief and the IRA commit horrible crimes. This is all done through the selection of detail that the audience is told. The camera shots used in the movie by Sheridan are used to work in favour of Gerry and against the English. The riot scene in the movie shows the viewer through the use of a camera shot, a jumpy shot bringing a sense of chaos to the viewer. This frightening sense of chaos brought about by the camera shots is seen by the viewer to have been brought about by the English Army through their lack of investigation. We see images of rubble, people scattering, people with limbs missing which seems to be the actions of previous confrontations between the British Army and the Irish. As for the images and camera shots shown is this scene Sheridan has manipulated the audience in believing that in the past the British Army have caused conflict as in this scene they are the ones chasing the civilians in tanks. They are shown as callous and brutal as they are performing their chase around little children. Because of the Army’s military style approach to the matter, we as the viewers see them as the people who had probably caused the prior destruction to the town. This leaves the viewer being positioned to respond negatively towards the army. During the interrogation scene the viewers are positioned to feel hatred towards the police. The viewer is positioned and manipulated in this way by the way the camera shots have been used. We as the audience see the police as overbearing and ruthless as the viewer sees the camera shots as looking down on Gerry making him look innocent and vulnerable. On the other hand the viewer sees that many camera shots are of the polices arms or backs which leads to Gerry having to turn around to answer them. This means of disrespect towards Gerry is greatly seen due to these camera shots, which therefor manipulates the viewer’s attitude towards the justice system as negative. The imagery used while Gerry is being interrogated is one of a cold harsh environment by the way the room is dark in colour, doors are slamming and keys are locking. Sheridan uses this imagery to symbolise the police and justice system as they are reflected as cold and harsh. While Gerry and Guiseppe are in jail the viewer learns of Joe who is the person that really committed the Guildford bombings. The viewer is position to feel a great hatred towards the police as they placed an injustice on four innocent people. The issue of prejudice is shown when the police do not tell of their mistake to the public but let ...
