She goes about the story describing her sexual experiences and cravings using very personal short paragraphs. She doesn’t specifically use “I” throughout the short story mainly because the author doesn’t want her to have self-respect or self-evidence in any way. Still the first person narration is very impacting to the reader giving clear and lucid descriptions of the narrator’s different occurrences involving men. Minot chose this perspective to, in a sense, bring the reader inside the main character and to feel what she’s feeling. Through this, the reader can also see where the author stands in relation to the story and understand the author’s opinions to the piece of literature. The language and tone of the story, which was original at the time, is also emphasized by the first person narration. In the closing remarks of the story the girl realizes her mistakes and seems to have matured from all her experiences. At this point the reader feels connected with the main character in a way that can only be accomplished using first person point of view. If third person point of view were used in “Lust,” the story probably would have never made it into the textbook. With the story told by an outside narrator, it just wouldn’t have the same affect on the reader. The whole point of the story is to go about it listening to the girl’s problems and accounts and by the end, form your own opinion of her.
