..., he has put a lot of passion and love into this piece. This could be saying that he felt the same way for his poem as he did lost partner. You also get the feeling that he feels he has no meaning in life anymore, his partner was everything to him and now he has gone and left him along in the world. Auden writes; “I thought that love would last for ever”. It seems like he wants everything else to stop because his partners life and the love between the two has also stopped. It says this in the name of the poem, ‘Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephones”. Auden writes; “Silence the pianos”. In the second poem by Gwen Harwood, called “In the park”, the possibly single mother comes face to face with an old lover. Harwood writes; “Someone she loved once.” Maybe they were once a married couple, but later in the poem she writes; “There but for the grace of God,” he thinks. She thinks the he thought that if he had married her, he was now looking at what his wife would now look like. So they weren’t once a married couple, maybe just an old flame. She plays over in her mind what she thinks the man is thinking. Harwood writes; ““How nice,” et cetera.” and “Time holds great surprises” The mother is so scarred at what the man is thinking. After the man leaves the women sits there staring at her feet, while nursing her youngest child. The words; “Staring at my feel” & “eaten me alive”. are linked by the ryhmes to “It’s so sweet” and “watch them grow and thrive,” are suggesting that the children are growing at her expense. She once used to be an attractive, fashionable girl, that the ex-lover once knew. Now she is not. Harwood writes; “Her clother are out of date.” This showing that she is no longer a attractive and fashionable girl, her children have taken this quality away from her. she is now begining to relise more that this path that she has taken in life is the wrong path.
