Plate Tectonics

...magma, slowly, slowly, drifting into and away from each other. If I was to predict the future positions of the continents, (and I will), I would look at the plates and the ridges where they meet. If we start with home, North America, it will eventually collide with Asia, (Alaska with the far east tip of Russia). South America will tag along, just kind of floating west. Africa will move in an eastern direction, scraping into the underside of Eurasia. Australia and India will move will move up into the southern part of Asia, and Antarctica will remain a floating block of ice. Since Europe and Asia are connected, Europe will basically follow Asia and move southeast. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is the one controlling this continental dance. The big key is subduction and divergence. It’s expelling large amounts of lava, which creates new crust (seabed). This pushes the plates away, the South and North American plates move west and a little north, while the African and Eurasian Plate are being pushed East and a little south. This is divergence, and this is causing the Atlantic Ocean to get wider. (An interesting fact: Iceland lies right on this ridge, and there is a lot of volcanic activity there. My guess is that Iceland will eventually be much ...
