After reading a brief biography of Dickens, we can induce that Great Expectations included many details of Dickens’ own life and understand how Great Expectations conveys the intended purposes to the readers through the use of specific details and many literary devices. Dickens’ style of writing is one of Elizabethan, very different from todays. It was especially hard to interpret some of the euphemisms of the 18th century and fully understand their purposes served to the story. Furthermore, the sentence structure of Dickens complicates the story for an easy read. For me to enjoy Great Expectations, I read each chapter slowly and delicately. At the end of each paragraph, I would reflect my view on Pip’s situation. I would put myself in Pip’s situation and ponder over what I would do. Great Expectations puts readers in the role of almost a philosopher, to ponder over life and society. It evokes self-awareness in us through the self-awareness of Pip in addition to few other characters. Great Expectations give us a clear idea of the consequences of decisions we make in our life.
